field trip

Yesterday for oceanography class we went to Hampton Harbor. We we went on a boat and caught a bunch of different things living in the bottom of the ocean. We broke up into 5 different groups and did different activities. first we navigated and had to figure out where we were on a map. we did this by using a compass rose and these weird rulers. next we went and caught plankton then looked at. Plankton moves really fast. After we learned about where different things live in the water and why. I learned that Maine has a lot of plankton. Then we went to test the water in the ocean. We took a sample using this tool that caught water. We tested its ph level, its density, and its temperature. Lastly we went to the last station, where we got to look and hold different creatures. For the second part of the field trip we went on the beach and had to do different things with the sand. We had to get different samples of sand from different ranges. I learned the the sand closer to the water is more compacted because of the watrer hitting it. Then we looked at the seaweed the washed up and had to see what we found in it. We found sticks, feathers, dead parts of crabs, and seaweed. We also talked about sand dumes and how they are naturally made and protect people houses and land from waves.
